1 Set targets
Target objectives fall out of your problem analysis exercise and are stated in past tense. Put another way, if all of the root causes of your problems were fixed, what it be like?
For example, if you had identified that a problem of bed blockages was actually caused by inadequate availability of doctors prepared to discharge patients, then target objectives might be:
- There is capacity to make discharge decisions at all times.
- Junior doctors and nurses have the competence, confidence and authority to make discharge decisions.
Convert each of the underlying causes to your issues/problems into target objectives. Write these in the ‘Target objectives’ section of your A3.
