What is Stewardship? We will explore this concept in the context of your work as managers.
One definition of stewardship is:
… the conducting, supervising, or managing of something;especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care <stewardship of natural resources>
Stewardship – it’s about looking after resources that are not yours. It is bigger than you and will be here well after you’ve gone. Your unit needs to survive you.
You are a small part in the continuum of your health service building on what those you succeed began and passing the baton to those who follow. You don’t own your turf – you are taking care of it and hopefully making it better than when you got it.
This is a really powerful concept – take time to reflect on this.
As we said earlier, knowing the money side of the equation is empowering. And out intention is that you become an empowered and efficient manager, who makes the most difference drawing on the least amount of resources. After all, that is what an multiplier does! And in this world of diminishing resources and natural reserves, we must be mindful of what we are using, and make every attempt to draw the most value out of what we already have – people, capital, utilities, supplies – you get the picture.
