What if you stopped believing you could do everything?

The stress of time pressures and work overload comes from thinking that we have some control over time, and that we should be able to do everything within the time we have.  When we can’t do either, we worry that we are failing in some way – or blame others for failing us.

However, what if you changed that story and assumed instead that there will always be more work than you or anyone can do in the time you have.  Let’s assume that will never change – there will never be enough time, energy, effort, resources, knowledge to meet the demand.

How does that change your story? Does it take the pressure of trying to do everything?

In the same way that you can’t know everything – you can’t do everything.

It is about choosing what is the best use of your time right now.

The thing is, you make a decision at a point everyday to stop work and go home.  Have you completed your work then?  Not usually and you never will – especially if you are a manager and have no-one to hand over to.

Activity

Reflect on the following:

  • At what point do you call it a day?
  • If you did that sooner, what would happen (negative  and positive consequences)?
